Some Lesser Known Facts About Meredith Marks
- Meredith Marks is a noted American jewelry designer who is known for starring in the American reality television series ‘The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’ (2020).
- Growing up in the Gold Coast neighborhood in Chicago, Meredith Marks first developed an interest in jewelry at a very young age when she came across her great-grandmother’s jewelry collection. A jewelry connoisseur, her great-grandmother had acquired her jewelry pieces from all over the world.
- Meredith was captivated by the beauty of her great grandmother’s deep-colored 40-carat aquamarine gemstone, which, embellished a cocktail ring surrounded by diamonds. The gorgeous ring was once displayed in the window of American Gemological Laboratories.
- Meredith Marks grew up observing her mother, who, while getting ready, tried on extraordinary pieces of jewelry, which mesmerized Marks.
- Her mother’s Marina B earrings, which had changeable gemstones at the bottom, fueled Marks’ passion for jewelry. Marks’ fascination for the Marina B earrings later led her to include multi-functional and versatile pieces in her designer collections.
- After graduating from Loyola University Chicago, she worked as a model for a while.
- Along with her sister, Meredith established her first business, a pilates studio in Chicago, in her early 20s.
- Later, she became a real estate developer and also started a health club.
- Despite having a stable profession that earned her adequate income, she felt unfulfilled.
- After her marriage to Seth Marks, she relocated to Park City, where Seth worked as an executive at Overstock.com, a tech-driven online retailer based in Salt Lake City, Utah.
- Following Seth’s resignation to his job at Overstock.com, Meredith and Seth maintained part-time residences in both Park City and Chicago.
- In 2004, while Marks was working as a real estate developer, she was mugged on a seemingly safe street in Chicago. Apparently, Marks was walking down the street while talking to her contractor who told her that a worker will be unable to show up at work because he was in jail for hitting his girlfriend. In the middle of this conversation, Marks was banged on the ground and robbed. In an interview, while recounting the event, she said,
I decided I didn’t want to do business with men who beat women. I sold everything and got out of those businesses.”
- Consequently, Meredith reconsidered her career options. The incident made her realize that life was too short for pursuing a career that doesn’t satisfy her.
- For the next five years, Meredith spent enjoying her married life and raising her kids, meanwhile trading stocks for income and exploring her career choices.
- Soon, she tapped into her passion for art. After the completion of her course at Gemological Institute of America, she began creating jewelry, which she sold at small trunk shows. Amid the 2009 recession, Meredith Marks founded her eponymous jewelry line.
- Launching her jewelry line amid recession led Marks to use less gold and leave a lot of negative space in her designs to make it more affordable. She employed artisans in the US, Hong Kong, and India to fabricate her sketches.
- Marks continued to grow her business, and soon, she moved to Park City. Thereafter, she started selling her jewelry online, in some stores, and at various events all over the world, meanwhile anticipating a brick-and-mortar store dedicated entirely to her jewelry.
- Then, Marks made acquaintance with Sally Nadler, a Park City resident who had experience in the fashion industry. Nadler helped Marks to grow her business by assisting her in hosting a couple of trunk shows in Park City and New York City.
- As they continued to work together, Nadler was intrigued to make a comeback in the fashion business ending the break which she took to raise her kids.
- Marks and Nadler’s dreams turned into reality on December 9, 2019, when they opened a Meredith Marks store on Main Street in Park City.
- The store featured Meredith Marks products, as well as handbags and clothing from other designers. The store is operated by Nadler, meanwhile, Marks resides in Chicago, where she designs products, and visits the store monthly.
- Eventually, the Chicago-based designer launched an online store for the label.
- The brand is known for its versatile and multi-functional jewelry with interchangeable parts, for example, an earring that may double as a pendant.
- While talking about her design inspirations, in an interview, she said,
My designs are inspired from all aspects of life. I love to travel, and many pieces are created from foreign motifs I have seen in my travels, or stones that I have found on those trips.”
