He is from an impoverished family as his father was an egg-seller and his mother was a traveling saleswoman.

He did odd jobs to support his family financially: worked at a drug store as a soda jerk.

He enrolled in the army in 1942, and two years later, he was sent to Italy as a second lieutenant in the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army.

In 1945, Bob was severely injured while rescuing an army radioman in a German machine gun attack.

He was admitted to Michigan Hospital, and during his recovery time, he met his first wife, Phyllis Holden who was a nurse there.

Still, after a little improvement in his health, Bob’s right shoulder was shattered, and the vertebrae in his neck and spine were fractured.
