Political Journey	• Bishop was elected for the first time as a member of the Australian House of Representatives in the 1998 federal election for the seat of Curtin in Western Australia. • In the John Howard Government, Bishop was appointed Minister for Ageing in 2003. During her High School, Bishop was the captain of the debating team and co-head perfect in her final year in 1973.

Mrs. Bishop is the fifth generation of an apple and pear orchard dynasty in the Adelaide Hills. Her grandfather and Sir Thomas Playford, the most legendary of South Australian leader who was the Prime Minister of Australia from 1938 to 1965, were very close friends.

Both her mother and her grandfather were Mayor of the local council in the Adelaide Hills.

Mrs. Bishop moved to Western Australia and became a successful solicitor, but she says it was not until she went to the US and did a course at Harvard Business School during 1996, Mrs. Bishop was inspired in the USA to become involved in the federal politics.

Mrs. Bishop describes herself as a Christian in her outlook and attitude. She says, “I’m not a regular churchgoer, but I feel very comfortable when I go to church. I feel very comfortable in my faith.”

Before entering politics, Bishop was a managing partner of major Australian law firm Clayton Utz.

Along with her new leader, Bishop is in favor of an Australian republic, but this is not one of her top priorities.

Mrs. Bishop once expressed admiration for former Labor leader Kim Beazley and said she thought he would have been a good Prime Minister. “I knew him before I went into politics. After I got into politics and was able to observe him at close range, I found him to be a thoroughly decent person. And he could have been a great Prime Minister of Australia.

One of the most interesting facts about Bishop is that she likes to run and walk when in Canberra; she always walks from her home to the Parliament House.
